How technology, sensors, and smart monitoring power sustainable innovation. Sustainability in agriculture starts with insight. At Montreal Solutions, we believe data is the key to building smarter systems that are better for the planet — and that’s exactly what we’ve been doing in partnership with one of the world’s most innovative farms. On this floating farm, located in the heart of a busy harbor, sustainability and innovation go hand in hand. From energy use to water management, everything is measured, monitored, and optimized using advanced sensor technology. Here's a look at how this unique farm puts data to work.
A Smart Start with Weather Data
It all began with the installation of a high-precision weather station. By measuring wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity, and rainfall, the farm can make informed decisions about irrigation, fertilization, and crop management. Accurate weather data helps anticipate conditions and adapt quickly — critical for sustainable farming.
Monitoring Wind for Renewable Energy
On the floating platform itself, a wind turbine generates clean energy. With sensors tracking rotation speed, turbine direction, and the platform’s movement, performance data is collected in real time. This enables continuous optimization of wind power use and reduces dependence on traditional energy sources.
Real-Time Solar Panel Insights
The farm also operates 170 solar panels — and six of them are directly monitored. By analyzing real-time energy output, the farm improves efficiency and ensures energy supply meets demand. It’s a small data stream with a big impact on sustainability.
Smart Innovation in Waste Management
Inside the "urine factory," cow urine is processed to make it more environmentally friendly. By measuring flow rates and eventually tracking chemical compositions, the farm is developing a deeper understanding of waste treatment — an important step in closing the loop of circular agriculture.
Tracking Visitors, Anonymously
Technology isn’t only used behind the scenes. A people counter in the farm’s shop anonymously tracks visitor numbers and entry points. This helps the team improve the layout, flow, and customer experience — proving that smart data also supports smart service.
Saving Water with Flow Meters
The most recent addition? A flow meter that tracks water use in the cooling system. By measuring every drop, the farm reduces waste and protects one of our most valuable natural resources.
Why It Matters
These innovations show what’s possible when data meets purpose. With the right tools and the right mindset, sustainability becomes not just a goal, but a measurable, manageable process. At Montreal Solutions, we’re proud to help make that happen.
